My Approach

So what is an Integrative Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor?

Integrative means that I use different theories and techniques, depending on what you need.  That might mean that we chat about what's on your mind or it might mean we use drawing or story or objects to work through your specific concern.  Rest assured that we'll work in a way that suits you and is agreeable to you.

Humanistic refers to believing that we are equals in this process and that you are valued for being who you are, whoever that might be.

Psychotherapeutic means considering not just the here and now of the situation but also the there and then.  It's a way of understanding how we reached the place we are at now and choosing what we want to keep and what we want to 're-write', in terms of our 'way of being.

Counsellor:  I like to think of 'counsellor' as a 'wise guide'.  You are the expert on you, but I have skills in reading the map and shedding light, and sometimes helping carry the load.

It's easy to get lost in a long list of the reasons why people might come for counselling.

I much prefer to say that if you need help getting unstuck or need to talk about something difficult that's holding you back, then get in touch.  Sometimes we need a safe space to talk about something that's painful or difficult.  Sometimes we don't know what's wrong, just that it is.

Therapy is more than talking.  If you struggle to put your thoughts and feelings into words, don't worry, there are still lots of ways to work together and find a way forward.

Maybe you just need some management strategies or are looking to become your best self. Therapy isn't just for when things are at their worst.  It can be a way to work towards becoming your best!

If we're not a good fit I will try and ensure you know where you can turn for help & support but I hope that we can work out what you need.

I have an online practice, using secure video-conferencing software that is easy to use, for anyone within the UK.  Online therapy is just as effective as traditional methods and users say that they find helpful and convenient.

I have a geographical practice within Richmondshire, North Yorkshire and offer therapy via secure video link to anyone within the UK
